ADHD Counselling

What is Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a mental disorder that is most common among children (9%) but also affects adults (3%). It is characterized by high activity levels, difficulty in concentration, resistance to sitting for long periods, and trouble restraining oneself or delayed gratification. This diagnosis is more commonly given to males than females. There are two forms of ADHD, Type 1 (Inattentive) and Type 2 (Hyperactive / Impulse). While there are no known specific causes of ADHD, studies suggest it is genetically transmitted and that prenatal conditions may impact the likelihood of its occurrence.

How Does ADHD Affect People?

The effects of ADHD can be far ranging, especially when it carries on into its adult form. Trouble concentrating can lead to low class grades or job performance. Disorganization can lead to lateness and chronic unfinished tasks. Impulsivity can lead to addictive tendencies and money problems. Emotional difficulties lead to irritability or hypersensitivity. Hyperactivity may lead to inner restlessness or risk taking. These effects can have disastrous consequences unless the managed properly.

What is Depression Treatment?

Just as depression has many origins, it also has many treatment alternatives. The two main treatment options are medication and counselling or psychotherapy. As many studies have shown, the best treatment of counselling involves both of these options working together. Sometimes all that is needed is a listening ear, but sometimes more is required. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the premier psychotherapy recommended for depression, which all our counsellors at Freedom Counselling are trained in.
